For most job candidates there are parts of the job description for which you have years of experience. However, it is all too common there are a few required or desired skills for which you have little to no experience. This will undoubtedly come up in your job interview, but if it weren’t a hurdle you could overcome, the hiring team wouldn’t have invited you in. Career Coach Steve Piazzale says the best way to overcome this is to relax and acknowledge, yes, you may not have directly worked with that particular program, but that you are a quick learner. Then proceed to quickly and succinctly explain a relevant story where you came in to a situation with little knowledge on, but you used your other skills to succeed. As you wrap up the story, end with, “as you can see, I am a quick learner.”
